The latest addition to Mattel's best-selling fashion doll range has caused near-riots in toy stores as children and collectors alike rush to pick up their very own Bulimic Barbie.

The 12" poseable figure, which went on sale in British high streets yesterday, is the most recent of Mattel's attempts to bring Barbie into the 21st century. Previous efforts have included Office Barbie, with a smart suit and little black briefcase, and Schoolteacher Barbie, complete with blackboard and bright, attentive little Pupil Shelley.

Overjoyed enthusiasts say the new doll, complete with a fridge full of ice cream, chocolate and cake, and her very own vanity unit, is the epitome of doll technology.

"Look at this," squealed mother-of-two Dawn Galway, 31, activating the toy's realistic gag reflex by pushing its hand into its mouth. "Isn't that the cutest thing you've ever seen?" she asked, as the synthetic vomit gushed into the tiny basin. Mattel are especially proud of the dietetically deranged doll. A PR spokeswoman for the toy company said: "Mattel have an ongoing commitment to fans of Barbie to keep her relevant and now. Market research indicates that many young girls are developing a fascination with bulimia and other eating disorders, and this new doll reflects that."

Long time Barbie enthusiast Kylie Holridge, 10, is entirely taken with the new Barbie toys.

"It is very important what Mattel are doing with Barbie," she said. "All of their toys and accessories that I have got are very good for giving me ideas about what I can do when I grow up. I have got Aeroplane Pilot Barbie for my last birthday. I would not have thought that girls could be aeroplane pilots before, but now I know that they can, as long as they are pretty and thin and have nice big bosoms.
